Cognitive Augmentation

Cognitive Augmentation asks how wearable sensing can capture cognitive states and how interaction can support them. Eye movement is a central signal here. Tracking it over time shows when a person reads, how attention shifts, and when the gaze of two people synchronizes. Such measures record cognition continuously, which questionnaires and one-off tests cannot.

Methods

The sensing builds on the eyewear platform of the Augmented Perception line: EOG and motion sensors record eye and head movement during everyday activities. The group develops its own prototypes and evaluates them in laboratory and field studies. Quantitative measures are combined with qualitative methods to understand how people experience the systems.

Goals

This line serves the chair's first strategic goal: technology for cognitive health and dementia prevention. Continuous, unobtrusive tracking of reading and attention could help detect changes in cognitive function early and support interventions. The chair develops this together with partners from neuroscience, computer science and the health sciences.

Ziele
